Chapter4 시작!

오늘은 사전 예문도 살펴보고, (몇 개는) 직접 만들기도 하면서 익혀야겠다.

 

1. "I'm so jumpy". Fear replied. "My nerves are shot!"

 

jumpy a. 조마조마한, 흔들리는

you are nervous or worried about something.

-> I listen to the music, Debussy Claire de lune played by 조성진 whenever I feel jumpy.

 

one's nerves are shot v. 신경이 예민하다(안절부절); 매우 지치다

One is mentally or emotionally exhausted, overwhelmed, or overwrought.

-> My nerves were shot when I finished the yearly project at work.

2.

"We all have our off days."

 

off day n. 일이 잘 안되는 날day off (^0^) ↔ off day (ㅡ_ㅡ)

-> You made my day. Actually, I had a off day today.

 

3.Then Mom appeared in Riley's doorway."The Mom bad news train is pulling in." said Anger. "Toot, toot!"

 

doorway n. 출입구

pull in v. (기차 등이) 역으로 들어와 서다; (도로 한 쪽으로) 차를 세우다

-> Thousands of people poured out when the last train pulled in the station.

toot n. 자동차 경적, 호루라기 소리

 

4.

What did we do to deserve you?

어디서 이런 복덩이가 왔을까~?

(기억하고 싶은 문장이라 책상에도 적어놨다. ㅎㅎ)

-> I must have done something right to deserve you in my life.

 

5.

The mouse looked like a zombie as it eerily said, "Come live with me, Riley.". Then it keeled over and died!"

 

eerie a. 괴상한, 으스한 [이어리]

keel over v. (특히 몸이 좋지 않아서) 쓰러지다

She ducked behind the console and messed with a few wires and switches.

 

duck v. (머리나 몸을) 휙 수그리다

you move head or the top half of your body quickly downward to avoid something that might hit you, or to avoid being seen.

-> I ducked behind the desk and peeked at them talking.

 

7.

Joy rigged it so the memory played in Riley's mind like a dream instead of what Dream Productions had put on.

 

rig v. (장비를) 설치하다; (부정한 수법으로) 조작하다 n. 장치

-> The lights had been rigged (up) but not yet tested. 

-> He said the election had been rigged. 

 

8.

Joy skated around Headquaters, mimcking Riley and reliving the happy memory.

 

relive v. (특히 상상 속에서) 다시 체험하다

If you relive something that has happened to you in the past, you remember it and imagine that you are experiencing it again.

↑ 헷갈리는 단어이지만 잘 정리되어 있어서 메모!

Relive is to live an experience or memory again (re+live). 

-> We like to relive the old college days whenever we both meet.
